Apache Wash Trailhead

Desert hiking can be challenging especially in the summer. We were armed with plenty of water, a hat, sun glasses, and a healthy sense of respect for our physical (out of shape) condition in relation to the 110 degree day. That we got a late start suggested a strategy where we walk for time versus distance. Jon and I agreed to 30 minutes with check-ins every 10 or so to see how we were handling the heat.

The heat was oppressive and I felt every step given this was my first “hike” in a very long time. I realized that walking the tread mill in air conditioning does not prepare one for summer outdoors bright sun. I found myself angry all of a sudden, angry that this once fit body was now out of shape. There I said it, it was sobering to realize how much work I needed to do to get back in cardio shape. In that moment, I committed to keep walking, listening to my body in relation to what it had that day. At the one mile mark - I looked forward an it was a large hill followed by who knows what and I said - let’s turn around. I think I could have done it but I wanted to make sure I had sufficient energy to finish in the heat safely. So we returned the way we came, sat under the pavilion drinking our water and I thought here we go.

Sometimes you just have to muster the bull dog determination to keep walking, keep trying. Only forward, no looking back filled with what ifs - just keep walking….
